This is a really important post for me. I’m going to make it a sticky for a while so I can get as many votes as possible…
I have written a proposal for a resin jewellery book, which would reveal the secret behind my ice jewellery as well as 9 other projects for the beginner to intermediate resin crafter. Unfortunately, the publishers in this country don’t think there is a market for it. I need you to change that! This competition is mainly for the UK readers, but US ones are welcome to participate (I think it’s only fair).
The prize is one of my ice rings (pictured), and to enter, all you need to do is leave an honest comment to this post.
The two questions I would like you to answer are: Would you buy a resin jewellery craft book? and Where do you live? If you would like to leave further comment on what you would expect from the book, price, whether you would also accept it in e-book form, etc that would be great. The winner will be picked at random on October 25th 2008.

I’d certainly consider buying a craft book on resin jewellery for beginners. As a beginners book, I’d expect it to cover the very basics and to give clear, concise instructions, with illustrations and several realistic projects. Maybe a ‘what to do if things go wrong’ section and, if they exist, cheap, alternative methods – for those people who want to give it a try but are worried about spending loads of cash, in case it all goes wrong!! A list of suppliers is always helpful (maybe you’re suppliers would sponsor, or, even stock the book, in return for being listed?) With regard to price, I personally wouldn’t want to part with too much money, as I have no idea whether, or, not I have an aptitude for it, so no more than £12 – £13. For an e-book, I’d expect to spend a lot less (I really don’t like e-books. ps I live in the UK.
I probably would. I have been interesting in resin jewelry for awhile now but haven’t tried it yet. It would be helpful to have a more in depth instructional book than just what I’ve seen in a couple of tutuorials online. I live in the USA, and would prefer a book.

I would buy a published book rather than an e-book because I would give it as a gift (probably to my very creative niece). However, the picture of the ice ring is a real tempter in wanting to try a new craft as it is so unique and beautiful, so I am sure a book of this nature wouldn’t gather dust on the bookcase in this household.
I would expect to pay between £10-£15 for the published book and less for the e-book.
The idea of the ice jewellery seems fantastic. Great idea and good luck!

Having seen so many lovely resin pieces I have been very tempted to give it a go… love trying out new things and techniques, and this is exactly the kind of thing I’d ask for as a birthday or xmas gift.
I’d expect it to cost in the region of £10-15, and would prefer a hard copy… I’ve never bought an e-book before. Ever.
As a total beginner I’d expect it to have clear instructions as well as a suppliers list. But then also a few projects to move on to after the simple ones have been mastered. I always feel that the books I get the most value from are those where it is the techniques that you’re taught (allowing you to turn it into whatever you want) rather than a step by step project – but a combination is great.

i would be interested. not sure about an e-book as have never read one – but hey we all need to move into the 21st century at some point! I think up to £15 would be a good price.
I would def be interested in giving it a go but do I want to spend loads of money on all the equipment? I dont know how it all works but it should be appropriate for those not wanting to buy loads of equipment (just amking the odd bit) and those who want to take it more seriously (if this is appropriate?)

I prefer a paper book to an e-book. I think a book on resin techniques would be fantastic. I have always wanted to learn, and a book with great photos and descriptions would be ideal.

It would be interesting to read about it so why not, but as said, paper book is more fun. E-book could be a good idea as well but I personally prefer the paper ones. Price I have no idea about, don’t even know what books cost nowadays..? I’d like a book with a lot of great quality photos, that would make it an awesome and beautiful piece to have!

I’d but a book on resin techniques definately, I’ve tried using it a couple of times and not ahd great success so it would be great to find out where I’m going wrong. And I’d love to know how to make those beautiful ‘ice’ crystals. I would prefer a paper book as I tend to take better care of those than the information I’ve printed from the web.

I have a lot of kraft books and I love them, especially when I do krafting with my daughter and niece. Resin jewelry is a special technique and I never did that kind of kraft… a book will be necessary for me if I want to try it ! And it is so beautiful !
If the presentation is attractive, if there is a lot of images, good explainations, and a good price… for sure, I will buy it.

I would be interested in a resin jewellery book… resin items are really cool and I’ve often wondered how things are made. Being crafty in general (although mosting in the sewing side of things), any crafty book appeals to me, especially one with tutes! And that ring is gorgeous.

I defintely would buy it. I was actually looking around for a book that taught me how to set up embedding things in resin. I would also need to know all about the sanding stage & layering. If it was already out, I would have bought it, as I’m finding it hard to find a book with up-to-date techniques, and you know I thought you should get your ice-resin pieces published!

I would buy the book about resin jewelry craft book, I even bought a resin and have it at home but I don`t really know where to start with… there is no books like that here and it is a shame as I know many people like to try this technique and this is not so easy without explanation… I would buy e-book but I prefer paper copy… I live in Buckhinghamshire…

Having seen your work at a craft fair I would definitely be interested in a step by step book that would help me achieve similar results. I would anticipate paying £12.99 and would consider it ideal as a present also. Having spent many years in sales for publishing houses I am surprised that you are unable to find a publisher/packager to take this project on. I would reccommend that you take it to the London Book Fair and try to generate interest there. Good luck
i think a book that gives resin techniques that isn’t a) all crafty crafty oldy (you know what i mean) b)too modern ( as in resin stuff you can wear everyday perhaps, a bit diff to the kind of high fashion, nice, but not practical kind of stuff. guess i would pay 15-20, for a book, its nice to have something tangible.. i’m in berkshire, uk.

Having seen your work, I’d certainly be interested in a book that detailed the how to’s.
There are a multitude of books out there about jewellery making which is a constantly growing market, however, resin would be a totally new and refreshing different technique.
Ps, that ring is to die for.

I’d buy! I wanted to do resin jewellery on my course but never had the chance. I’d pay £12-15 for a bbok that had the kit list, basic techniques,a range of interesting projects differing in ability, clourful photos, a gallery and a list of suppliers. Not keen on an e-book though, I like craft books and looking at the pics for inspiration – usually in bed!
It’s bonkers that they don’t think there is a market for this type of book – they don’t run enough courses up and down the country so books are a lifeline for people who want to learn about different techniques. PS. I’m in Leeds!
i think resin is a fab material – maybe you could discuss some other resin stuff too? i’ve seen some fab resin paper weights….. and i LOVE that ring, i’d be too selfish and keep the secret to myself 😀

Yes I would definately buy it. I think alot of people would. Publishers should consider printing a paperback, jewellery making is big money, and loads of jewellery sellers would like a step by step resin jewellery making book with tips and techniques, what to buy, how to buy it. Fab idea.

I love that ring!!! I might buy a book (as long as it was clear that you could create resin without needing a special studio outside of your home, if that’s true) but wouldn’t buy it as an e-book. I’m in London.
I think it’s a great idea I would also be interested. I hate ebooks – especially for tutorial type things so would argue for a real live book that you can hold. I live in the UK

It’s something I’d definitely consider buying. I’d like to see it in printed format so I could have a look at the book before buying. That way I could see what materials I’d need and work out how much it would all cost.

I would definitely buy a book about resin. I wish I had had a book to work with when I started making resin jewelry, as it would have been more of a success from the start and not so much a “learning experience”! I am writing from Vancouver Island, Canada.

If lots of specialist materials are required I probably wouldn’t buy a book but if it was quite straight forward I might be tempted! I would buy the book as a gift for a friend who makes jewellery and is expanding to new mediums. I think I would probably pay about US$20 for it. This friend happens to live in the UK so that would be convenient but I live in the US . BTW, the ring is beautiful!

I honestly would because I like to explore new mediums as a little distraction from woodburning and resin sounds like one I would need relatively few purchases to get into. I mean that I don’t need a kiln, or a torch or things like that. Plus, I see lots of resin items on etsy, but there is virtually no printed work to learn how to get into it – you have to teach yourself which sucks.
You could always self publish for a while and sell them on etsy to prove there is a market….?

I would hope the book would have projects ranging from easy for beginners through to something more advanced. I actually bought a packet of resin and haven’t used it yet so this could be just the thing to get me started!

Hi, I’m in Australia, and I would love to see a book. There isn’t a great deal out there on resin and given the excellent online bookstores these days I could get it sent across if you do publish in the UK. I prefer books to e-books when it comes to art/craft as they are usually so well presented/photographed that they become a little art form in themselves. Plus, I already spend too much time looking at screens – there’s nothing like sitting in the sun or curled up in a chair with a great, inspiring book. Price is tricky as things tend to be more expensive in the UK than Oz. I wouldn’t spend any more than 15 pounds, which probably doesn’t seem that much to you, but is almost 45 dollars here, which is on the expensive side for a craft book. There would need to be at least 5 projects in the book (out of say 15-20 total) that really excited me, otherwise I’m probably not going to buy it. Like most people here, the craft shelf is pretty full at home, and I have to be discerning! I think this is where your ice technique would do so well, it’s very different and I think people would buy a book just for that.

I live in Northamptonshire and I’d buy such a book. You only have to look at my book shelves for that. I prefer books to e-books, although I’ve just bought a book on DVD(!) and then I printed it out (!)
I love suppliers pages because they really help you get started. I like …. how to put things right pages…. ‘cos when you’re learning you need that kind of hand holding don’t you.
I also like starter projects .. and then you make a little progress and then a little more.. Beginner, intermediate and advanced projects I suppose.

I’d be willing to purchase an e-copy but have to admit that I’d prefer flicking through the pages of a hard copy, it’s much easier to refer to as well.

I might check a resin jewelry craft book out at the library but I wouldn’t buy one, not unless I really loved it, I used to buy books too much and now I only buy them after I read them if I can justify reading it again in the next year, it’s my book buying law.

I would buy one in paper form, I would find that easier to follow (and dont really want resin near my laptop lol!) I would expect lots of step-by-illustrations for the projects as I am a complete beginner, with lots of top tips for a good finish as I love the look of resin pieces but it seems quite scary!
