Fabric cake!

Hey Denyse Schmidt fans- check out this cake!

This cake is by Baker Days, they offered me a free letterbox cake in order for a review. Not one to turn down cake(!), I said yes!

At Baker Days you can personalise designs for all occasions and upload your own photos which are then printed on a cake of your choice. I thought a fabric cake would be a lovely gift for a fellow sewer, a close-up of a quilt block would look stunning too! I chose to photograph some of my Flea Market Fancy fabric- the colours are reasonably accurate, the orange looks a bit dirty on these photos- it’s actually much better in real life.

The letterbox cake starts at £14.99 for a madeira sponge which seems like quite a lot for such a small cake (it’s about the size of a side plate and shallow so that it fits through the letter box as the name would suggest). However this does include first class UK delivery (which was pretty speedy- I sent off my photo and the cake arrived 2 working days later), careful packaging, a lovely tin, a notecard with your chosen gift message and even some balloons and streamers! If you pay a bit extra, other cake flavours are available including chocolate chip.

I must admit, it was pretty tasty- the sponge is, well, spongy, and the jam and slight butter cream used to attach the icing to the top is nice too. And because it’s not a massive cake you don’t feel guilty about eating half in one sitting….

Finish a long finished- and button giveaway winner revealed…

I finished my footstool for the finish-a-long over on Rhonda’s blog that I mentioned quite some time ago now. The first quarter is up by the end of next week (how fast is this year going?!) and I had hardly done anything on it, so the last 3 days I’ve used a spool of thread and finished it just this evening!

Sorry for the rubbishy picture, I need to hoover so I didn’t want to show you any of the other rooms 😀 It’s made from two charm packs and a little bit of orange for the centres, The original Ikea cover is on the inside to cover the seams.

Oh and I also made half a cake today. I didn’t have a smaller tin to make two to stack, and I knew cutting it like a sandwich would fail so I cut it across the cake and made it a bit fat half cake with butter cream and the odd splodge of jam! Look I put little daisies on it 🙂

But of course you’re all waiting to see if you won my box of buttons. Well there were 411 in the box when I counted them, which means the closest person is Fiona who guessed 407! So close! I shall be e-mailing you Fiona 🙂

Birthday stuff finished!

And with an hour and a half to spare!

This quilt probably took a total of 5 hours to make, so nice and quick when you find out that half an hour of that time was spent by me fighting with my sewing machine to attach the binding rather that shred the thread. I’m pleased with how its turned out because it’s the first time I’ve made my own binding. I sewed it on in an extremely unorthodox fashion but I think it works. I’ll do the binding properly on my next quilt which I should hopefully have more time for!

I also baked this cake today using this recipe and the biscuit recipe from the Biscuiteers book. It took a lot of effort and a trip out to buy more butter and it doesn’t look at all like what I was going for! I wanted to roll a fern into the icing and paint over the relief so it looked more realistic. It didn’t work so instead it looks like I painted a tree on with coloured cocoa butter. Also I wish I was a bit neater with drawing with icing. Oh well, it’s to be eaten anyway and if the build up to the recipe is anything to go by it should be delicious!

Next to do is make some cake truffles for him to take into work tomorrow, but I’ll do those after dinner.

Make 50: Week 22 and 23

I was a bit naughty and didn’t blog a make last week, that’s not to say that I didn’t make anything, I in fact made a lace cuff amongst other lacy things for Kathleen and Lily’s but didn’t take a photo. A lot of my makes get shipped off as soon as they’re finished which makes this (and my failed attempt at Crafting 365 over on Flickr) near impossible for me!
Anyway here goes, these are technically kind of the same thing, but I don’t think it matters- available on Etsy, Folksy and my site
